Are you planning a lengthy backpacking tour, considering going on an adventurous trekking holiday or just wanting to get away from it all over a weekend?
Beyond Hope offers you an introduction to backpacking / trekking. During the weekend you will trek through the beautiful Hope Valley and surrounding countryside, you will camp in quiet and basic campsites, cook simple meals on a range of typical backpacking stoves. You will receive instruction on campcraft, navigation and equipment selection & use from an experienced backpacker and expedition leader.
You Will Need:
Beyond Hope has a limited number of backpacking tents, which can be hired at additional cost, but you will need to supply your own standard walking and lightweight camping equipment. An equipment list will be supplied on request. We will also supply basic rations for a two day trip.
Learning Objectives:
The weekend itinerary is flexible, but typically will follow this pattern
We will meet on Friday evening at Hope Station for those travelling by rail or a pre-arranged parking place. We will take a look at equipment and how to pack a rucksack before walking a short distance to our first night’s campsite. At the campsite we will erect tents and cook a simple meal under instruction from our tour leader. After this we will discuss the following day’s route and timetable.
On Saturday we will strike camp for a full day trek with all our equipment packed into our rucksacks. The route will vary depending on the weather, peoples’ fitness, experience and interests. We will prepare a mid-day meal during the course of the walk. When we reach our campsite we set our camp and cook an evening meal. Following this we will discuss ways in which you might prepare for a longer backpacking / trekking trip, covering topics such as types of trek at home & abroad, equipment selection, personal preparation and safety. If participants wish, we can enjoy an adventurous night hike in the remoter areas of the Edale Valley.
Sunday morning will involve striking camp after preparing breakfast. The main feature of this morning involves putting into practice some of the skills that you’ve developed during the previous day hike. You will be asked to navigate us back to our starting point by an interesting route. When we return to Hope we will evaluate our weekend and consider ways in which our interest in trekking and backpacking might be developed.
